WAIMEA — The annual weekend event will lasso in two days of rodeo competitions on Sept. 3 and 4 at the Parker Ranch Rodeo Arena in Waimea. The action-packed days are held each year as a fundraiser to provide scholarships for school-age children of Parker Ranch employees.
Family fun begins on Saturday at noon with rodeo events that include everything from team roping, double mugging, Po’o Wai u, bull riding and junior bull riding to Wahine barrel racing and Wahine breakaway roping.
Residents of all ages participate in various events. The century team roping competition requires one team member over the age of 50 with combined ages of teammates totaling more than 100. Children 12 and under participate in the keiki barrel racing and the calf scramble events.
On Sunday, The Round-Up Club, in partnership with Parker Ranch, will host a live horse auction. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and horses to be auctioned can be viewed after the morning’s Rodeo slack. Non-riders can come and experience the fast pace of a Ranch horse auction but gate tickets are required to attend. The auction begins at noon.
Food and refreshments will be available both days, with ongoing events lasting until 5 p.m. In addition, a variety of vendors will be on hand both days selling items including western style crafts, clothing and other items.
Tickets to attend the Rodeo are $7 per person in advance, available at the Parker Ranch Store at the Parker Ranch Center or the Parker Ranch Headquarters in Waimea. The price is $8 at the gate on rodeo days. Children 12 and under are free.
